The Iowa City West boys' tennis team completed an outstanding season earlier this week, winning the Class 2A team title in Des Moines.
Iowa Prep Sports asked West Coach Mitch Gross for some thoughts from his players.
Here, in the players' words, is a look at a season to remember:
“This season has been both the best and the hardest for me. It was very hard for me to move down from the (number) 1 spot to the 2 spot because I felt I wouldn't be able to lead my team as effectively from that spot. As time went on, though, and the season progressed, I learned that it didn't matter where I played, because the team would always have my back and I would always have my team's back, which was one of the most important lessons I've ever learned from playing high school tennis.
"Our team is something special. We all get along with each other amazingly well, and we would all stick up for each other whether it be in tennis situations or in real life situations, and that's more than just a team, it's like a family. Winning the state title made me realize how special this family really is, and how lucky I am to be a part of it no matter what spot I play."
“Our season was incredible! I knew we had a chance to do something special early on in the season when we had back-ups who could challenge and sometimes beat the starters. Our reserves brought us competition in practice unlike any other team in Iowa. They pushed us to improve.
“Team Nights, which occurred each Friday evening before Saturday meets. really brought us together.
“Winning the state championship against Ames in doubles was the perfect way to cap our season. Coach Gross put a heavy emphasis on doubles and we stepped up when the odds were against us.”
“Hitting the winning shot to clinch the championship was picture-perfect way to win. It's what every athlete dreams of doing as a kid.”
“This season was all about winning the state championship. That was our goal and it feels great to have succeeded. Tuesday was amazing. To win with this team over Ames mean so much, and to win in doubles showed how much we have improved since last season.”
