Former West Delaware standout B.J. Hermsen has been demoted by the Minnesota Twins from the Beloit Snappers of the Midwest League to Elizabethton of the Rookie-level Appalachian League.
Hermsen threw a one-hit shutout against the Cedar Rapids Kernels in Cedar Rapids on June 17 but struggled in his next five starts, losing all five and giving up 28 runs (23 earned) in 21 1/3 innings.
The 20-year-old right-hander pitched last season in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League, so he was attempting to make a significant jump to the Midwest League.
The Twins also released former Kernels pitcher Chris Armstrong, who was 0-1 with a 18.00 ERA in 10 relief appearances for Beloit.
In other minor league baseball news,
Lucas O'Rear made his professional debut late last week, throwing one shutout inning for the GCL Reds. O'Rear was a 13th-round draft pick of the
Cincinnati Reds in June.
