Here's what I would find most encouraging about the newest verbal commitment to play for Iowa's men's basketball team:
He is transferring to Oak Hill Academy.
Andrew Fleming of Nashville, Tenn., announced Monday that he will play at Iowa after his senior year of high school next year. That senior year will be spent at Oak Hill in Mouth of Wilson, Va.
Oak Hill, as basketball followers probably know, is a hoops dynasty. It has won all sorts of mythical (the only kind that exist) national championships, and has seen 29 of its former players advance to the NBA. Among them were Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant and Rajon Rondo.
Big Ten players who played at Oak Hill include Purdue's A.J. Hammons
Fleming had played at The Ensworth School, a private school in Nashville. He was Tennessee's 'Mr. Basketball” for Division II Class AA, and his 19-11 team won the state-title in that division for the fourth-straight year.
Here's what Fleming told The Tennessean about his decision to move to Virginia for prep school:
'I think it's going to be best for me and my basketball. It's definitely where I need to be so that I can play at a very high level when I get to college. I just want to get a whole lot better.”
Fleming is a 6-foot-5 shooting guard. He sounded like he had a crush on the entire Iowa campus and its inhabitants in this Tennessean story.
'I just had an amazing feeling about it. Overall, the reason I picked Iowa is the coaching staff is amazing and they love me. The campus is amazing. It's 30,000 kids - they're all die-hard Iowa fans, each one of them.”
I don't get too swept up in this recruiting gobble-wobble and can safely say I never will. Someone says Fleming is the No. 7 player in Tennessee, a 3-star recruit. Fine, whatever. Yet, he was wooed by Florida, Ohio State and Memphis, among others. That's your recruiting ranking to follow.
Fleming will play at Oak Hill for a year. That says he's taking this basketball thing a little bit seriously.
