Apr. 9, 2016 2:33 pm
IOWA CITY — Former University of Iowa two-time NCAA champion and Hawkeye Wrestling Club member Brent Metcalf was denied an Olympic Team spot again.
Metcalf, the top seed at 149 pounds in men's freestyle, went 0-2 at the USA Wrestling Olympic Team Trials on Saturday at Iowa's Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Metcalf finished in a 2-2 tie with Frank Molinaro in the quarterfinals. Criteria favored Molinaro, who scored the biggest move with a two-point score compared to two one-pointers from Metcalf.
Hlas: Brent Metcalf and Olympics are strangers, again
With a chance to make one of the national team spots with a third-place finish, Metcalf fell to Minnesota Storm's Jayson Ness, 9-7, in the consolation round.
'Deflated for sure, the toughest thing for me is probably letting down our crowd, family supporters, really the country," Metcalf said. "I do believe I am the best guy, not today, but I do believe I am and we'll see what shakes out with the finals here."
