The Iowa men’s basketball team has added a guard to its roster, landing Florida International transfer Ashton Williamson.
Williamson, a sophomore-to-be from Gary, Ind, started 16 of FIU’s 33 games and averaged 24.2 minutes per game last season for the 10-23 Panthers of Conference USA. He averaged 7.3 points, 2.7 assists and 1.6 steals. He made 28 of 85 3-pointers for 32.9 percent.
As a senior at Sunrise Christian Academy in Wichita, Kan., Williamson averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds. He averaged 16.4 points and 9.4 assists in his final year of high school at 21st Century Charter School in Gary.
Williamson is the eighth transfer to join Ben McCollum’s first Iowa team and gives the Hawkeyes 11 scholarship players.
