Hawkeye Downs rained out again

May. 20, 2011 5:36 pm
The second attempt to host Van Meter Night at Hawkeye Downs Speedway has been foiled due to weather. For the second straight week, the fundraising effort for Children's Miracle Network to benefit the University of Iowa Children's Hopsital, featuring a celebrity Legends car race including former NFL wide receivers Tim Dwight, who was a standout athlete for Iowa City High and the University of Iowa, and Eddie Berlin, a former University of Northern Iowa player, was cancelled.
It's the third straight year Van Meter has sponsored a night, donating proceeds to charity.
Hawkeye Downs Race Promoter Mike Becker said they will try to hold the event later in the season.
“Yes, we will,” Becker said in a phone call after the cancellation. “We don't have a date yet to discuss.”
Hawkeye Downs has had three of its first five dates wiped out due to weather.
Below is an email from the track:
Van Meter Night at Hawkeye Downs Speedway has been cancelled for May 20, 2011. Van Meter Night will be rescheduled to a later date.
After consulting with sponsors the decision was made to cancel tonight's program. Rain is just entering the area and radar shows no window to complete tonight's program.
