Happel wins national title

AKRON, Ohio - Lisbon's Carter Happel captured the 58 kilogram championship at the ASICS FILA Cadet national wrestling tournament Sunday at University of Akron's Louis and Freda Stile Athletic Fieldhouse.
Happel defeated Nick Lee, of Indiana, 12-7, for the championship. He finished with a 6-1 mark in competition and secured a spot to represent the United States at the 2014 FILA Cadet World Championships July 15-20 at Snina, Slovakia.
Happel capped his sophomore season with a 53-0 record and second straight state title, winning the Class 1A 132-pound title. He is looking to become the Lions' third four-time state champion.
Jake Marnin, of Southeast Polk, won the 125-kg title, beating Ohio's Kevin Vough, 9-4, in the finals. Marnin was also a runner-up in Greco-Roman.
Center-Point Urbana state champion Brock Rathbun placed third at 54 kg, pinning Vitali Arujau in 41 seconds in his last bout. Rathbun went 6-1 overall.
Highland twin brothers, Bryce and Drew West, finished fifth and sixth, respectively, at 50 kg.
Drew West won the 50-kg Greco-Roman title, beating Montana's Trae Vasquez, 11-2, earning a chance to compete in Slovakia as well. Ethan Andersen, also of Southeast Polk, won the 100 kg Greco-Roman title.
