Grayhounds open season with victory over Little Hawks.

The Burlington High School girls basketball team opened the season with a 55-48 victory over 11th-ranked (Class 4A) Iowa City High Saturday in Iowa City.The Grayhounds overcame a 9-6 deficit with three minutes left in the first quarter to take a 13-11 lead at the one-minute mark of the period, and never trailed the rest of the way.Hilary Beaird, who led the BHS scorers with 12 points, hit a bucket with three seconds left in the first half to give the Grayhounds a 36-24 advantage at intermission."We held the ball for the last 35 seconds to set up a final shot," BHS coach Mark Miller said. "That was big, going up 12 points at halftime."Beaird also led BHS on the glass with nine rebounds. Victoria Ita grabbed seven boards, while Chandra McCampbell swiped seven steals. Hillary May came off the bench to pitch in 10 points."We showed a lot of depth," Miller said. "It was a solid defensive effort by the team.
