Hey.
It's radio time. This is a stream of consciousness. No editing or thinking really.
Dolph just said RB LeShun Daniels is still affected by his ankle, which he hurt on Sept. 12 at Iowa State. I think he's correct. I do, however, think it was odd that he got the carry on third-and-2 at Sconnie's 8 just before they went for it on fourth down. I don't know. We'll see this week.
Caller Chris — KIRKAPALOOZA
Caller Jerry (I think Jerry) — Dolph is taking a frosh WRs question right now. He's talking Jerminic Smith, whose profile, I believe, will bloom this week. He also thought the other two frosh, Adrian Falconer and Emmanuel Ogwo, would take redshirts. Falconer has played, so he's in and no redshirt this season. Ogwo, I believe, will redshirt barring injury.
CALLER WHO'S BUSY WITH HIS GARDEN UP IN NEW ALBIN — Ask the coach if he would just rest Daniels the next two games going into the bye, so he can be good before the bye.
Also, he asks about Akrum Wadley. Fumbleitis.
Banking question. Oh no, wait. Praise for Jaleel Johnson. Well done from the gardner from New Albin (beautiful area, I wish I had a garden anywhere but mainly in New Albin).
Breaky time.
Craig from Sioux City . . . WE HAVE A WILDCAT REQUEST
Craig wants redshirt freshman WR Jay Scheel in at wildcat QB.
Never mind the fact he's never played a down. Or has played maybe three downs. Ever.
And we're talking New Kirk, not RIVERBOAT GAMBLAH KIRK.
Dolph laughed and said he wouldn't be surprised with New Wild and Crazy Kirk, but then Dolph said he was being facetious and we mentally high fived.
Someone wants to know who the third string RB is. (Please, let's have moved beyond Sam Brownlee jokes.)
It's Akrum Wadley.
Dolph is score wandering now, looking for 'double-low scoring games.' I think Dolph is concussing himself now with all the low-scoring games flooding his mind right now.
Dolph gets kudos from Chuck. Probably his agent. Or a cousin. (I kid, I kid!!!! I'd love to have an agent. Or cousins.)
Chuck asks KF about why he always runs the ball from the 20. KF said they self scout every week (give them some credit, you guys). KF said he can't wait to listen to Gary and Ed when he retires.
Something about fuss about a playcall. I wasn't listening, I was tweeting.
KF said they do have a line of demarcation for 'going for it' on fourth down. It changes game to game and also factors in weather and how many yards to go.
Interesting. I'd love a peek at that sheet.
DOLPH IS LOSING CALLERS AND PROBABLY KILLING THEM
OK, overreaction. I do hope AJ is OK.
Dolph asks the Jay Scheel question. Oh, this is gonna be good.
Wildcat or pistol . . . KF: 'To be honest with you, ahhhh, no I haven't thought about that at all. We haven't talked about that at all.'
KF does acknowledge that, maybe, in the future. Scheel was a terrific prep QB. Scheel was full speed this summer. KF excited about his future. He's doing fine, other guys are ahead of him. Top four receivers this year: two seniors, two juniors. There will be opportunity next season.
We're slowly approaching internet curiosity status.
DOLPH DIDN'T KILL AJ!!!!!
From high school coach to college coach: Prep coaches use Hudl, do you use certain cut-ups? Good question here.
Iowa does use Hudl, mostly for crooting. Xs and Os is the technology. Can make cutups 'for anything you can imagine. It's endless, the opportunities.'
Former Iowa WR Bill Happel told us on On Iowa Live that they used to splice their own tapes. KF said that's exactly what they used to do.
IPads, speed, quickness, mobility. Iowa's vid director Bob Rahfeldt and his staff have video downloaded from practice before the coaches are off the field.
On interesting thing: You know how you see still pictures of formations on iPads on NFL sidelines? KF said he really wishes they could do that in college. I guess they can't. I know I've never seen them.
More weird college football weirdness. There must be a reason, I'm just not seeing it right now.
All right, I'm going to slow down with serious stuff only from here.
We have a 'what Kirk writes down on his white cards' question.
On recruiting: KF said they're almost done. Most commits they've had at this period. Staying in touch with the few they still want. Said they have a good feel for where that might be going.
KF said football is closer to an early signing day. KF sees some wholesale changes coming to college football. Resistence from people in the south. Southern schools want to keep visits in the fall. They would rather not have players visit the north when it's nice. KF thinks there will be an early signing and more official visits at convenient times. Football can't pay for parents/guardians on an official recruiting trip (if they fly), but basketball can? That one baffles KF.
More weird college football weirdness. I think it's probably 7/5 odds college football drops the NCAA in the next 10 or so years.
Talking Kid Captain now. Something that, KF said, has been a Mary Ferentz project. It's been 10 years for the program. Do good things for the UI Children's Hospital if you can. My daughter was in UI NICU as a preemie. It was hugely stressful, but we knew she was in good hands.
Some dude just used a racist term for Illinois' nickname. It makes me sad.
Joe Schobert talk. You guys remember Joe Schobert, right? You can't say his name without sounding like you're from Wisconsin.
Shoooowwburt.
KF just said he asked a young Iowa player if he knew who Vince Lombardi was. Nope. Of course, Desmond King won the Jim Thorpe Award this week as the nation's top DB (for the week, you know).
KF said he thought about asking the kid if he knew who Jim Thorpe was, but decided against it.
'He wouldn't know Jim Thorpe from Jim Beam,' KF said.
And now we're floating in space . . . it's beautiful here . . . New Kirk, New Kirk, New Kirrrrrrrrrrrkkkkk.
KF on Kyle Schwarber: He plays for the Cubs? (Quickly dealing KF into fantasy baseball league. He'll pick Manny Sanguillen 15 times).
KF still is for the 'year of readiness,' which is making true freshmen ineligible. I get it, I get it. I think he's realistic. The cows are in the corn on this deal. I don't see it changing. Like where his head is at here.
Old Kirk, he lurks, he lurkkkkkkkksssssssssss.
