Golf: Furnish helps Iowa to first-place tie after day one of four-state championship

Former Cedar Rapids Jefferson all-state golfer Megan Furnish helped Iowa to a first-place tie after the opening round of the 2012 Missouri Junior Girls Four State Championship at Sedalia (Mo.) Country Club.
Furnish, who will play next year at Southwest Missouri State, carded a 6-over-par 76, and team Iowa posted a 300 to tie Nebraska after day 1 of the two-day event. Charles City three-time 3A state champion Jessie Sindlinger posted a 3-uner 67 to lead all scorers. Furnish tied for the fifth-best round of all golfers.
South Tama's Taylor Van Dyk added a 78. Dyersville Beckman state champion Ellie Ament and Anna Cullinan, of Bettendorf, shot 79 apiece.
Missouri shot 312 and Kansas ended with 329.
The final round will be Thursday. Iowa has not won the event since 2004.
