Getting a boost

Jun. 25, 2011 7:35 pm
IZOD IndyCar Series drivers receive an extra boost of power. Twenty-four of them actually.
The drivers for the Iowa Corn Indy 250 had 24 bursts of the Honda overtake assist, providing an extra 200 rpm or 10 horsepower to their V-8 engines. The boost lasts 10 seconds and is activated by a button on the driver's steering wheel. It can be used at any time, but the system needs eight seconds to recharge after use.
Iowa Speedway is only an .875-mile oval and among one of the shorter tracks around, putting an emphasis on strategy in using them.
According to an IndyCar news release, parameters are updated before each race weekend to meet the circuit layout.
