August means the end of summer baseball and the start of the grid iron, here are The Gazette visuals staff's August favorite sports photos.
Cedar Rapids Xavier's Garrett Ries (23) holds up the trophy as the Saints celebrate their 8 to 1 victory over Central DeWitt in the Class 3A championship game of the 2019 State Baseball Championship at Principal Park in Des Moines on Saturday, August 3, 2019. Generally I dislike trophy shots since they are cliche and often not the peak emotion after a victory. But I photographed Ries eight days before for our state baseball preview and as I was editing the images after the game I was happy to see it was him holding up the trophy. The low, dramatic back light and composition also work well on this photo. (Cliff Jette/The Gazette)
Alburnett's Austin Huber (15) celebrates the game winning run against St. Mary's in a Class 1A semifinal of the 2019 State Baseball Championship at Principal Park in Des Moines on Thursday, August 1, 2019. I liked the celebration of the player who just scored with the reaction from the bench and fans plus the juxtapostion with the opposing player flailing on the ground by home plate. (Cliff Jette/The Gazette)
North Linn's David Seber (2) celebrates as he heads to first base after getting a hit that allowed Jake Hilmer and Austin Hilmer to score against Des Moines Christian during a Class 2A semifinal of the 2019 State Baseball Championship at Principal Park in Des Moines on Thursday, August 1, 2019. I all the years I have shot baseball I can't remember capturing a player celebrating so much on his way to first base. (Cliff Jette/The Gazette)
Cedar Rapids Xavier's Bryson Bastian (6) beats the throw by Marion to third base during a Class 3A semifinal of the 2019 State Baseball Championship at Principal Park in Des Moines on Friday, August 2, 2019. After 7 days of baseball it all starts to geel the same, I like how this photo actually captures the player out running the throw. (Cliff Jette/The Gazette)
Iowa City West's Nick Fleckenstein (4) throws to first base after fielding a Urbandale ground ball during a Class 4A semifinal of the 2019 State Baseball Championship at Principal Park in Des Moines on Friday, August 2, 2019. Fielding shots are hard to capture and the throw after often doesn't make for a dynamic photo but in this case I like the body language and face of the fielder as he threw to first base. (Cliff Jette/The Gazette)
Alburnett' pitcher Sam Hulk (19) reacts as Newman Catholic wins the Class 1A championship game of the 2019 State Baseball Championship at Principal Park in Des Moines on Saturday, August 2, 2019. Capturing the emotion of a loss is always more elusive than capturing the emotion of a victory. Loss is always quieter and more subtle, often more about body language than facial expression. Chad Greenlee hits from a bunker on the third fairway at the Cedar Rapids Men's City Amateur Golf Tournament at Ellis Golf Course in Cedar Rapids on Sunday, Aug. 4, 2019. (Rebecca F. Miller/The Gazette)
Iowa Hawkeyes linebacker Amani Jones ties his son's shoelace as they hang out on the field after practice during Kids Day at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City Saturday, Aug. 10, 2019. Players signed autographs and took selfies with fans, and families had a chance to watch a Hawkeye football practice. (Rebecca F. Miller/The Gazette)
'Call Us May Bee' teammates Chris Geiger of Bismark, North Dakota (left), and Phil Engen (right) of Cedar Rapids, sweep for a throw by Dan Buresh at the sixth annual CedarSpiel curling event at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena on Sunday, Aug. 11, 2019. The games, hosted by the Cedar Rapids Curling Club, pitted 22 teams from 15 states against each other to compete for titles and prizes. (Rebecca F. Miller/The Gazette)
Marion head coach Tim Lovell (left) talks to Isaac Cechota during practice at Marion High School in Marion, Iowa, on Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2019. (Jim Slosiarek/The Gazette)
Sports is full of traditions. One of those is when parents, siblings and friends slap hands with the Prairie Hawks varsity football team to wish them good luck with their upcoming season following the inter-squad scrimmage at Cedar Rapids Prairie High School in southwest Cedar Rapids , Iowa, on Friday, Aug. 16, 2019. I like the repetition of the hands of the fans and the players. What sports traditions are at your school? (Jim Slosiarek/The Gazette)
For Epenesa 'Eppy' Epenesa, life is all about family. It was evident in everything I saw while I followed him around the football field and his home. Epenesa 'Eppy' Epenesa stands near a football player wearing the 2019 edition t-shirt of the summer conditioning drills he runs in his back yard during the Orange and Black Scrimmage at the District 7 Sports Complex across from Edwardsville High School in Edwardsville, Ill., on Friday, Aug. 23, 2019. Uso means brother in Samoan. (Jim Slosiarek/The Gazette)

The boys participated in Epenesa's summer conditioning drills that he runs in his back yard. (Jim Slosiarek/The Gazette)
