Gable named one of the best Summer Olympians by ESPN

Jul. 25, 2012 3:40 pm
Dan Gable displayed one of the most dominant performances in Summer Olympics history, and certainly produced the ultimate in wrestling.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of Gable's gold medal effort, winning the 68kg (150 pound) title at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Germany. He steamrolled his way to the championship without allowing a single point. Gable, the legendary Waterloo West prep and Iowa State champion who coached the University of Iowa to dominance, is being inducted into the FILA Hall of Fame during the Olympic Games in London, England.
ESPN has created a list of top Summer Olympians. Gable's accomplishment landed him on the list at No. 19,
Obviously wrestling fans and Iowans, in general, are biased and likely think Gable should rank higher on the list. I think a second gold medal would have been a strong possibility had he not embarked on his coaching career so early.
Where would you rank Gable's feat? Personally, I think it ranks higher, despite he doesn't have the Olympic longevity as some of the others.
