Ah, the classic Big Ten rivalry, Maryland and Iowa.
'Fear the Turtle' is the backbone of the University of Maryland's marketing campaign. That's a Fun Fact. Here are some more:
1. Maryland has had a football team since 1892. This will be its first game in Iowa.
2. With a win, Iowa will be 8-0 for the second time in school history. The Hawkeyes won their first nine games in 2009.
3. Iowa is ranked No. 10 in Associated Press' Top 25 since early in the 2010 season. This is its first Top Ten appearance in AP's last 88 sets of rankings. Maryland hasn't been in the AP Top Ten since 2001.
4. Maryland hasn't beaten a Top Ten team since it downed No. 8 Boston College on Nov. 10, 2007.
5. Iowa's Halloween record is 6-8-1. Its last Halloween game was a 42-24 home win over Indiana in 2009.
6. Maryland's Will Likely had 233 punt return yards against Richmond, breaking the Big Ten single-game record of 201, set by Iowa's Nile Kinnick in 1939. Likely has 401 punt return yards this season, 98 more than any other FBS player and 181 more than anyone else in the Big Ten.
7. Iowa is the first FBS team to have two different players rush for 200 yards in sequential games (Jordan Canzeri, Akrum Wadley) since 1996.
8. C.J. Beathard is the first Iowa quarterback to win his first eight starts.
9. Maryland has been intercepted more than any team in the FBS, with 20. No one else has been picked off more than 17 times. Iowa has been intercepted just three times.
10. Iowa has 12 plays of 40 yards or more. It had 12 all last season, and had a total of 13 over 2012 and 2013.
11. Maryland cornerback Sean Davis is the national leader in forced fumbles per game, with .71.
12. The Terrapins are tied for fourth in the nation in quarterback sacks with 3.43 per game. Iowa is tied for 12th with 3.14.
13. Iowa has had three players rush for 100 yards in a game, and has three players with 100 receiving yards in a game. The last time it had the former was 2005. The last time it had the latter was 1995.
14. Both of Iowa's starting safeties (Jordan Lomax and Miles Taylor) are from Maryland. Only one of the Terrapins' two starting safeties is from Maryland.
15. Counting Maryland's 31-30 loss to Penn State last Saturday, Terrapins interim head coach Mike Locksley's career record is 2-27.
16. The team nickname at Elizabeth High School in Elizabeth, Ill., was the Terrapins. The school closed in 1985.
17. Maryland's Byrd Stadium is 10 miles from the White House. Iowa's Kinnick Stadium is 10 miles from Herky Street in North Liberty. While there are millions of white houses in the world, there is only one Herky Street. Probably.
