Fun Facts: Iowa-Wisconsin

Jan. 20, 2015 11:38 am
Iowa-Wisconsin. Two teams with 4-1 records in the Big Ten. One of the two isn't from a state with an NFL team that let a Super Bowl berth slip through its hands (literally) Sunday.
On that note, here are some more Fun Facts:
1. Wisconsin leads the series, 80-79. But the two teams haven't played a game against each other with that many points scored since Iowa's 84-77 win in 1995. That was 35 meetings ago.
2. The average first-half scores this season: Iowa 37, Opponent 27. Wisconsin 36, Opponents 25.
3. This is Bo Ryan's 14th season as Wisconsin's coach. His teams have never finished lower than fourth in the Big Ten standings. Iowa hasn't finished as high as fourth since 2006-07, Steve Alford's final season as coach.
4. Wisconsin's coach is William Francis Ryan. Iowa's is Francis John McCaffery.
5. Each Wisconsin starter has shot at least 37 three-pointers.
6. Iowa junior center Adam Woodbury has never attempted a college 3-pointer. He was briefly open from about 25 feet last Saturday in the Hawkeyes' win over Ohio State, and a few fans actually encouraged him to shoot. Just a few. He's an intelligent player, so he never considered it.
7. Gary Close is in his 12th year as a Wisconsin assistant coach. He was an Iowa assistant for 13 years.
8. Iowa is the only Big Ten team undefeated in true road games, at 3-0.
9. Wisconsin lost at Rutgers. Before beating Penn State earlier this month, Rutgers hadn't defeated a Big Ten team since its 2006 win over Penn State.
10. Badgers guard Bronson Koenig is a Native American, a member of the Ho-Chunk tribe.
11. Dubuque is just 10 miles further from Madison than Iowa City. The Mississippi River passes Dubuque. In fact, it passes 10 different states. Only three of them - Wisconsin, Iowa and Kentucky - have teams in this week's Top 25 basketball polls.
12. Wisconsin guard Zak Showalter is from Germantown, Wis. Iowa forward Dom Uhl was born in Germany.
13. The 80 richest people on the planet have as much money as the poorest 3,500,000,000. OK, that isn't really a 'fun” fact.
Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery was ejected from Iowa's last men's basketball game at Wisconsin, 54 weeks ago. (Cliff Jette/The Gazette-KCRG TV9)
