You'll get a ton of Un-Fun Facts about the Iowa-Iowa State game this week.
The time the game starts, the network that is televising it, how much Busch Light will be consumed before the game by fans of both teams … the mundane stuff you come to expect.
To heck with that. Here are the Fun Facts:
1. This will be the 65th time Iowa has played Iowa State. Big deal. Also on Saturday, Cornell will play Coe for the 127th time.
2. Pick the stat that works for you: Iowa has won the last two meetings. The teams have split the last six. Iowa State has won 10 of the last 19. Iowa has won 25 of the last 34 …
3. The previous five Iowa State coaches lost to Iowa the second time they played the Hawkeyes.
4. Iowa State's home-opener was a sellout (61,500 fans). Iowa's (68,075) was not.
5. Iowa State and Florida are tied for the FBS lead in interceptions returned for touchdowns with two.
6. Iowa has yet to allow an opponent past the Iowa 24-yard line.
7. Iowa State has averaged 524.7 yards in its last three games.
8. Iowa has 22 players on active NFL rosters, ISU five. The Hawkeyes had eight players drafted over the last three years, 30 this decade. The Cyclones had zero and five.
9. Iowa has 57 Iowans on its roster, Iowa State 41. Both have players from Humboldt and Williamsburg.
10. Iowa State's 271 passing yards ranks last in the Big 12. It would rank sixth in the Big Ten.
11. Iowa and Iowa State are both 2-for-2 in fourth-down conversions. Massachusetts is 4-for-4.
12. Ames was named for Congressman Oakes Ames … of Massachusetts.
13. ISU receiver Allen Lazard is second among active FBS receivers with career catches with 178. Only Middle Tennessee State's Richie James (223) has more.
14. Nate Stanley is the third Iowa quarterback to throw for at least three touchdowns in his first start. The others are Jon Beutjer (4) and Ricky Stanzi (3).
15. Iowa lost three fumbles against Wyoming. It lost two the entire 2016 season.
16. Nine Iowa State players have college diplomas. That total is tied for 17th nationally.
17. Of the 20 coaches among the two programs, over half graduated from schools that aren't NCAA Division I. Iowa State has two coaches who graduated from Mount Union, including head coach Matt Campbell. It also has two from Muskingum, and one each from Edinboro and Ohio Northern. Iowa has coaches who graduated from Coe, Wartburg, John Carroll, Emporia State and Concordia (Wis.)
18. It's 139 miles from Iowa City to Ames if you take Interstates 80 and 35. That's 244,600 yards. If you averaged 350 yards per game, it would take you 699 games to cover that distance, roughly 58 regular-seasons. You're better off just driving.
19. This year marks the sixth anniversary for the Cy-Hawk Trophy's farm family version, which quickly was mothballed. But we'll never forget, will we?
