Nov. 5, 2015 9:52 am
What's more fun than being unbeaten in November if you're a college football fan? Fun Facts about your team, that's what.
It's Iowa-Indiana. Let's roll.
1. With a win against the Hoosiers, Iowa would be 9-0 for the second time in school history. The first time was 2009. Iowa is currently in its fourth streak of eight wins or more under Kirk Ferentz. The longest was 13, from November 2008 to October 2009.
2. Iowa's all-time longest winning streak is 20, from November 1920 to October 1923. Indiana's all-time longest winning streak is 8, set in 1945 and again in 1967.
3. This is the first time the Big Ten has had three 8-0 teams (Iowa, Michigan State, Ohio State) since 1903 (Chicago, Minnesota, Northwestern). It was called the Big 9. Why isn't it the Big 14 today?
4. Iowa is ranked 11th in Associated Press' Top 25. Indiana hasn't been in the AP rankings since the Sept. 20, 1994 poll.
5. Hawkeye cornerback Desmond King returned an interception for a touchdown in Iowa's 45-21 win over Indiana last year. It was King's first career pick. He now has 10.
6. The Hoosiers have been outscored by 33 points this season, but have six more touchdowns from the red zone than their opponents.
7. Fun Fact No. 6 is largely because Indiana's defense has allowed 16 scoring plays of 25 or more yards, and eight of 50-plus yards. Iowa's defense has allowed one scoring play of longer than 30 yards.
8. Iowa has played just one team that currently ranks in the nation's top 50 in total offense. That's No. 48 Iowa State. Indiana is 27th.
9. Indiana has been to one bowl game since 1994. That was the 2007 Insight Bowl, which it lost to Oklahoma State, 49-33.
10. Every other Big Ten team has been to at least two bowls since 2011.
11. According to Covers.com, Iowa, Maryland and Northwestern have the best Big Ten records against the spread at 5-3. Ohio State is 3-5, Michigan State 2-6.
12. No one on the Iowa roster is from Indiana, and no one on Indiana's team is from Iowa. However, the Hawkeyes have linebacker Cole Fisher, and there is a Fishers, Indiana. Hoosier wide receiver J-Shun Harris II is from Fishers. He is out this season with a torn ACL.
13. Indiana has one of the Big Ten's three Memorial Stadiums. The others are at Illinois and Nebraska. Minnesota played in Memorial Stadium from 1924 to 1981.
14. Indiana's Memorial Stadium is also known as 'The Rock.' So is this man. So is this former federal penitentiary.
15. Indiana and Iowa are next to each other in the alphabetical listing of states. So are Illinois and Indiana. And Michigan and Minnesota. The Big Ten is close like that.
16. ESPN's sideline reporter for this game will be Dr. Jerry Punch. He has been with ESPN since 1984. He is a former emergency room physician. He once got an on-air apology from NASCAR driver Kurt Busch.
17. The Phunk Nastys will be performing Saturday night at Bloomington's venerable Bluebird nightclub. The Dandy Warhols will be at the Bluebird next Wednesday.
