Friday notes: Cougars dominate in I.C.

Cedar Rapids Kennedy swept the top four spots and rolled to the girls' championship at the Bob Brown Invitational cross country meet Thursday at the Ashton Cross Country Course.The Cougars compiled 16 points, finishing 1-2-3-4-6, and won their second straight meet. They edged Iowa City West at the Cedar Rapids Prairie Invitational on Saturday.Sophomore Lauren Meyer was the individual champ, finishing in 15:07. Alyssa Averhoff, Katie Wampole and Allison Culver were second, third and fourth.Monticello went 1-2-3 and won the boys' title, outrunning runner-up Kennedy by a 19-57 margin. Michael Melchert won the race in 16:34. He was followed by teammated Ben Ahlrichs and J.J. Frawley.
Schulte: Synonymous with efficiencyCedar Rapids Xavier quarterback Reggie Schulte has been the model of efficiency through the Saints' first two football games.A second-year starter, Schulte had completed 20 of 26 passes (76.9 percent) for 365 yards and seven touchdowns. He has thrown one interception.Schulte's passer rating of 276.0 leads the state in Class 4A.Xavier is 2-0 after pasting Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 49-0, on Thursday.
Defending champ Solon headlines Warrior InvitationalFour ranked teams are among the 12-team field for Saturday's Warrior Invitational volleyball tournament at Cedar Rapids Washington.Solon (2-0) is the defending champion and is ranked No. 3 in Class 4A.Other rateds are Johnston (5A No. 10), Cedar Rapids Xavier (4A No. 10) and Marion (4A No. 14).Pool play begins at 9 a.m. Eight teams advance to the championship bracket, which should begin around 2 p.m.
