Former Jefferson coach Fisk dies at 83

Another well-known, successful coach from Cedar Rapids Jefferson has died.Jack Fisk, who led Jefferson to the state football championship in 1972, died Sunday at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy from complications of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. He was 83.A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Teahen Funeral Home. Per his wishes, no funeral service will be held.Fisk coached football at Jefferson for 16 years, achieving a record of 112-36-2. The J-Hawks were 11-0 in 1972, the first year of the state football playoffs.He was school's head wrestling coach for three seasons, with his 1965 team taking second place at the state tournament. Fisk compiled a 35-5 record.Fisk was born Sept. 25, 1926, in Cincinnati, Iowa, and was raised on a farm near Pella. He played football and basketball and track at Pella High.He enlisted in the Navy as a 17-year-old and served in the Pacific about the U.S.S. MacDonough from 1944 to 1946. He married Arla Dickinson in 1951; they were married 59 years.He received a bachelor's degree from Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI) in 1951 and a master's from Iowa in 1960. He taught and coached at Waverly, Anamosa and Ottumwa before coming to Jefferson in 1962. He retired in 1993.Fisk is the fifth well-known coach at Jefferson to die this year, following Gay Dahn, George Hidinger, Bob Noonan and Bob Allen.
