CEDAR RAPIDS — Through the struggle of rain, Dustin Atkinson was able to get his revenge on Chris James.
This wasn’t an easy win for Atkinson thought after losing in a playoff at the Cedar Rapids Men’s City Amateur last summer.
Coming into the third day, Atkinson was seven strokes ahead of James.
James was able to shoot a 68 (4-under par) through the rain and mud in the third round, a tournament low for the day.
That put James in good shape after Atkinson shot a 74 (2 over) on the final day.
Atkinson, however, was still able to secure the win by one stroke, 208-209.
“I struggled a little bit during the rain, but I held it together just enough to get the job done,” he said.
Atkinson credited his driver and consistency for his success.
“I hit my driver well, kept it in play all day and just was relying on consistency,” he said.
This wasn’t the first time Atkinson was able to win a City Amateur tournament. He also won city titles in Cedar Falls and in Ames.
“... this is definitely the toughest one to win here in Cedar Rapids,” Atkinson said. “It's a great tournament. Lot’s of great players here.”
Caden Postma finished third at 5-under-par 211. Martin Golobiz and Kevin Ault tied for fourth at 213.
Pat Erb won the Senior City Am title with a three-round total of 3-under-par 213. Jeff Berndt and Tim Ingersen tied for second at 2-over 218.
