Dowling replaces Xavier in 4A
Jeff Linder Oct. 7, 2013 3:10 pm
Goodbye, perfect season. And farewell, No. 1.
Cedar Rapids Xavier's six-week ride atop the Class 4A rankings came to an end Monday, three days after the Saints suffered a shocking 26-10 loss to Cedar Rapids Washington at Saints Field.
Xavier (5-1) slid four spots to No. 5 in The Gazette's weekly poll.
West Des Moines Dowling assumed the top spot after handling Ankeny Centennial, 42-10. The Maroons (6-0) are followed by Iowa City West, Pleasant Valley and Ames -- all 6-0 -- then the Saints.
West rallied past Dubuque Hempstead, 39-35, last week, scoring on Micah Kelsay's 3-yard touchdown run with 8 seconds remaining. The Trojans are at Iowa City High in the annual Battle for the Boot this week.
The other No. 1 teams stayed the same.
Sioux City Heelan remains on top in 3A. Likewise Waukon (2A), Iowa City Regina (1A), BGM (Class A) and Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton (8-Man). All are 6-0.
Dowling, Heelan, Regina and Exira-EHK are unanimous in their top spots.
Heelan and Regina face tricky tests this week. Heelan hosts 3A No. 8 Carroll (5-1), which already has victories over top-10s Harlan and Spencer this season. Regina puts a 48-game win streak on the line at 1A No. 4 Wilton (6-0).
North Fayette Valley made the biggest move this week, climbing from No. 10 in 1A to a share of No. 5 after toppling then-No. 4 South Winneshiek, 44-34. South Winn slipped to ninth.
Two ranked teams are in action Monday night after their Week 6 games were postponed Friday due to weather. Class A No. 2 West Lyon (5-0) hosts Alta-Aurelia, and Class A No. 4 Ackley AGWSR (6-0) is at Mason City Newman. Monday's results will be reflected in next week's poll.
