Dillon upset with Cornell over salary

Nov. 18, 2009 3:38 pm
Matt Dillon, who resigned as head football coach at Cornell College on Tuesday, said Wednesday he is upset with the school that he will stop drawing salary at the end of January.
Sources have said Dillon, a former all-American quarterback at the school, was given the option to resign or be fired after four years as head man at his alma mater. Cornell went 6-34 under him, 1-31 in the Iowa Conference but appeared to be an improved team in 2009, going 2-8 and ending 18-game overall and 34-game conference losing streaks.
Dillon would not comment specifically about his depature, only to say he is disappointed he will not be paid until the end of the school year.
"It's just frustrating to me, given the kind of commitment we gave for four years here ... You determine that's not enough," Dillon said. "You try and be a professional and represent the school well, and in the end, unfortunately you're not treated like a professional."
Cornell Athletics Director John Cochrane did not want to comment on Dillon's resignation or the coach's salary displeasure, saying a press release the school released Tuesday would be its only statement on the matter.
"I have tremendous respect for Matt Dillon and a deep appreciation for everything that he has meant to Cornell College," Cochrane said in the release. "I wish Matt the very best in his future endeavors. He will always be an important part of this place."
