Decorah golfers grab command of 3A team race (Updated with links to results)

The field will be playing catch-up with the Decorah Vikings.Decorah took a convincing lead in the team race after the opening round of the Iowa High School Athletic Association Class 3A state golf meet Friday at Ames Golf and Country Club. The Vikings posted a score of 308, leading Harlan by 13 strokes. The final of two rounds is Saturday, beginning at 8 a.m.Decorah is in position to boast its first boys state golf team champion since 1968. The Vikings were paced by Maynard Newhouse, who carded a 74. Nick Nelson, who tied for fourth at the 2011 state meet, shot 77 for Decorah. Michael Peter and Bryce Pierce added 78 and 79, respectively, for the Vikings.Newhouse was second in the medalist race, trailing only Centerville freshman Alex Moorman by one stroke. Nelson was tied for sixth after the first day.Williamsburg junior Drew Slings is in contention, finishing in third after Day 1 with a 75. The Raiders were sixth in the team standings with 334.Washington's Alex Thode was tied for 10th with 78, helping the Demons score 329 and place fifth.

Fink carded a 75 and sat atop the individual standings after the opening round at Lake Panorama National Resort in Panora.Belle Plaine qualified in the team race and was sixth with 364. Algona Garrigan owns the lead with 346.

Iowa City Regina freshman Grant Hogan shot 90.
