Day 2 of the Class 2A state tennis meet

The first finalist team in state doubles has been determined at Veterans Memorial Tennis Courts in Cedar Rapids. Bettendorf's Kyle Johnson and David DeSimone cruised to a two-set win over Dustin Rhoads and Alex Qin of Ames.
C.R. Washington's Charlie Hammond and Mitch Blades are facing WDM Dowling's Elliot Baker and Anthony Forcucci in the other semifinal.
Blades and Hammond took the first set 7-6 (7-2).
Washington is the #3 seed, while Dowing is seeded second.
Baker and Forcucci force a third set, winning 6-3 in the second.
Hammond and Blades score a key service break to take 3-2 lead and then held their serve for 6-4 win and advance to the doubles finals.
Final game, Washington trailed Love-30 and battled back to close it out. Blades scored a nice volley winner to even the score 30-30 and then Hammond seal the win with a winner.
In doubles consolation, Tyler McCann and Mitch Anderson of Linn-Mar beat Calvin Song and Nirvan Tyagi of Ames, 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the fifth-place match against Alex and Collin Crowley of CB Abe Lincoln, who beat Nathaniel Gier and Philip Riley of Iowa City High, 6-2, 6-4.
Riler and Gier will play Song and Tyagi for seventh.
In singles semifinals, Fort Dodge's David Knight beat DM Roosevelt's Naveen Nath, 6-2, 6-2. Knight takes on WDM Valley's Matt Sturgeon in the singles championship match. Sturgeon defeated Ottumwa's C.J. Ray, 6-4, 6-3, in the other semi.
In singles consolations, IC West freshman Kyle Appel beat DM Roosevelt's Neel Nath, 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (6). Appel will face Sioux City North's Austin Grundy for fifth place. Grundy beat CR Kennedy's Jeff Damisch, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (5).
Damisch and Nath will play for seventh.
Consolations begin at 1:30 p.m. and championships will be at 2 p.m.
Randy Krejci just announced that the seventh-place singles match between Damisch and Neel Nath will be a walkover. Damisch has an injured elbow and will not compete. So, Nath is seventh with Damisch placing eighth.
The Crowley Bros. of CB Abe Lincoln beat McCann and Anderson for fifth place.
In the 2A final, DeSimone and Johnson won 6-4. They lead the second set 2-1.
In the singles championship, Knight (Fort Dodge) leads Sturgeon (WDM Valley), 6-5, in the first.
DeSimone and Johnson wins the last three games to take seven set. The Bulldogs are state champs, after finishing second a year ago, with a 6-4, 7-5 title victory.
Other doubles matches include, Baker/Forcucci TWDM Dowling) defeated Rhoads/Qin (Ames), 6-4, 6-3, for third. Gier/Riley (IC High) defeated Song/Tyagi (Ames), 6-7 (7-5), 6-3, 1-0 (8).
In singles, Naveen Nath (DM Roosevelt) beat Ray (Ottumwa), 7-5, 6-1, for third. Grundy (SC North) beat Appel (IC West), 6-4, 6-2, for fifth.
Knight took the first set against Sturgeon and just won the second set, 6-4. Knight wins the state singles title after placing third last year.
