CEDAR RAPIDS - Former Cedar Rapids Xavier prep Ryan Sweeney was designated for assignment Sunday by the Chicago Cubs, as they prepared for their regular-season opener against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Sweeney, 29, signed a two-year contract with the Cubs prior to the 2014 season. He is owed $1.5 million this season, as well as a $500,000 contract buyout.
The outfielder hit .194 in 36 at-bats this spring training and was beaten out for a spot on the Chicago roster by outfielder Matt Szczur and infielder Jonathan Herrera, who replaced Sweeney on the Cubs' 40-man major league roster.
Chicago has 10 days to trade, release or outright Sweeney to the minor leagues. He is a .276 career hitter in 682 MLB games.
