IOWA CITY - Fran McCaffery picked up his first recruit in the class of 2017 and the Iowa men's basketball coach didn't break the recruiting budget to make it happen.
McCaffery's son, Connor, a current sophomore at Iowa City West, committed to Iowa on Saturday night, according to the Twitter feed of his AAU basketball program, the Iowa Barnstormers.
Connor McCaffery, a 6-foot-4 guard, averaged 6.4 points and 2.3 rebounds a game as a freshman on varsity last year. McCaffery led the Trojans in assists with 128.
His last name notwithstanding, Connor McCaffery is a major get for his father. Connor McCaffery was ranked as a five-star recruit and the 24th-best prospect nationally by ESPN in the class of 2017. He comes from good bloodlines. His father played three years at point guard for Penn and led the Ivy League in assists and steals as a senior. His mother, then known as Margaret Nowlin, ranks 18th all-time in points at Notre Dame.
