Columbus leaving Wamac for NICL
Jeff Linder Aug. 8, 2012 11:32 am
Waterloo Columbus reportedly is leaving the Wamac Conference for the North Iowa Cedar League.
In a report by The Waterloo Courier, athletics director Aundra Meeks confirmed the move, which will take place in time for the 2013-14 school year. Columbus will replace Cedar Falls NU High, which has closed, in the NICL East Division. The move leaves a vacancy in the Wamac, which will have eight schools in the East Division and seven in the West upon Columbus' departure. The most logical replacement would be Union Community, and former Union athletics director Josh Johnson said last spring that the school would strongly consider a move from the NICL to the Wamac."We haven't had any conversations with anybody, but there are always schools that come up in conversation, and Union is one of them," said Marion AD Corby Laube. "We didn't want Columbus to leave, but it makes sense for them in terms of enrollment."
