May. 13, 2011 11:30 pm
Coe took a 3-2 lead after five innings Friday then shut down a Wartburg rally in the sixth for a 3-2 victory in the Iowa Conference baseball tournament at Memorial Stadium.
The Knights had scored two runs in the sixth with one out, but catcher Kevin Schuver gunned down a would-be baseball stealer and pitcher Wade Morris struck out a batter to end the inning.
Morris (10-2) got the victory for the top-seeded Kohawks, working 6 2/3 innings. Tyler Hixson got the last five outs for his eighth save.
Adam Nisenson had an RBI-single for Coe (31-10). The other runs scored on a groundout and a wild pitch.
Coe plays in the 1 p.m. title game today against Simpson or Wartburg.
Luther defeated Central, 14-4, in seven innings Friday to eliminate the Dutch. Then Buena Vista knocked Luther out of the tournament, 7-6, in 10 innings.
Coe's Nick Stein is safe at second as Joe Grote of Wartburg is unable to catch the ball during the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids on Friday, May 13, 2011. (Cliff Jette/The Gazette)
