She's a teacher. She's a coach. And this summer, Kathy Bresnahan was an author. Her project: Documenting the life and death of Caroline Found, and the 2011 Iowa City West volleyball season.
"Several people have considered writing about it, and I wanted it to come from the perspective of our team," said Bresnahan, the veteran West coach. Bresnahan led the Women of Troy to a state title when Found was a junior in 2010 — then guided them to another in 2011, just three months after the setter was killed in a moped accident in Iowa City.
"I guess I'd just consider it an act of love to honor Caroline, and for those kids who were on that (2011) team."
Bresnahan has sent a draft of her story to an editor, and said it will "probably take a year or more" for it to reach bookstores. Her tentative title: "Livin' Like Line — A Team, A Tragedy and A Triumph."
Bresnahan said she took "copious notes" during the 2011 season, which served as reference as she wrote the story. She said it took her "12 weeks, with 10- to 12-hour days" over the summer to complete it.
"It was a really emotional process," she said. "It was reliving that whole season all over again."
SENIOR-LADEN CPU POINTING UPWARD: With 12 seniors on the roster, you'd think it would be an impossible task to keep everyone happy. Winning helps. Center Point-Urbana is off to an 11-1 start, including key Wamac Conference West Division wins over Marion and Clear Creek Amana. The Stormin' Pointers also captured the championship of the Mount Vernon Invitational tournament Saturday. "It's going phenomenally," said CPU Coach Cathy Husmann. "We go to tournaments, and I get to my 18th substitution sometimes because I'm trying to get girls playing time. But they're accepting their roles, and they're playing excellent volleyball." Last week against Marion, the Stormin' Pointers rallied from a two-set deficit to win in five. Tuesday against CCA, they split the first two games, rallied from a 22-18 deficit in Game 3 to win 26-24, and went on to win in four sets. Husmann is in her fifth year as head coach. Seven of the current seniors are in their third season as varsity players. Senior Cheyenne Kinsella leads the team at 2.22 kills per game. Four others are at least a kill per game, including middles Kennedy Salow (senior) and Arika Wooldridge (sophomore). Another sophomore, Hailey Weideman, is the primary setter. CPU will compete at the Linn-Mar Invitational on Saturday.
WIN STREAK ENDS FOR DIKE-NEW HARTFORD: It took an out-of-state opponent to end Dike-New Hartford's long winning streak. Lenexa (Kan.) St. James Academy, the nation's No. 2-ranked team, beat the Wolverines, 25-23, 27-25, 25-16 Tuesday at Dike. DNH (6-1) is ranked No. 8 in the country and has won the past two Class 2A state volleyball titles. St. James has won five consecutive Kansas state titles.
