TIFFIN - Clear Creek-Amana's stout defense showed up in a big way in the biggest game.
The Clippers forced seven turnovers - seven! - and ran an interception back for a score in a 27-0 shutout over Davenport Assumption last night to take clear command of Class 3A District 5.
'We've asked the kids to believe and to work hard and to be champions,” Coach Matt Hughes said. 'And they've just done it. I'm so proud of these guys. I can't say enough.”
CCA (6-1, 5-0) turned a tight game into a blowout with interceptions on three of Assumption's first four passes of the third quarter.
After the Knights started with their backs on the goal line, CCA's Javon Manard picked off a slant pass and returned it 8 yards for a touchdown.
Nile Rourke got his second interception of the game on Assumption's ensuing possession. Manard matched Rourke with his second pick on the next drive.
Tanner Bandy's interception near the goal line with about 5 minutes left helped secure CCA's first shutout of the season. The Clippers allow only 7.7 points per game.
'Our defense has done that all year,” Hughes said. 'Those kids believe in the (game) plan and they execute.”
CCA hosts Vinton-Shellsburg next week, then finishes district play at Fairfield - which still needs to play Assumption (4-3, 3-1). The Clippers control their district path as they prepare for their first playoff berth since 2010.
'We've never been happier,” Rourke said. 'Best win of the season and best win of our lives so far.”
Fullback Aaron Akers ran for two touchdowns in the second half.
The Clippers put together a 12-play, 81-yard scoring drive late in the first quarter. Rourke converted two third-down passes. Then the senior ran for a 13-yard touchdown on another third down.
