CEDAR RAPIDS — That big puff of air you probably felt from the north last night may have been a huge sigh of relief.
Central City defeated Cedar Valley Christian, 68-14, to pick up its first eight-man football victory of the season and keep the Huskies winless.
'This was huge for us,' Central City Coach Brian Deal said. 'Cedar Valley had been gunning for us all season, and we were anxious to play the game.'
Central City (1-6) started the scoring quickly when Deshawn Leudeman took the opening kickoff 55 yards for a touchdown. 'I was really happy for Deshawn,' Deal said. 'He suffered a bad concussion last season and is just now coming back into his own.'
Later in the quarter, Seth Schlotterbeck scored the first of his three touchdowns for the Wildcats, this one on an 11-yard pass from David Mosher.
Not to be outdone, Cedar Valley Christian (0-6) scored on a 3-yard pass from Kenan Ulmer to Tom Scroggs to trail 14-6 after a quarter.
From then, it was all Central City. The Wildcats scored 34 second-quarter points for a 48-14 halftime lead.
The Wildcats were led by sophomore Gavin Pospisil with 88 yards on five carries, including two touchdowns and two 2-point conversions.
'Gavin is a tough, hard runner,' Deal said. 'He would come to the bench and suggest plays that he thought would work. It's great that we get him for a couple of more years. Cedar Valley is getting there. They have a great bunch of kids, and are well coached. We wanted to give them a good, hard, fair game tonight. I thought we did just that.'
