IOWA CITY — Cedar Falls hung around and hung around.
Then the ninth-ranked Tigers made two huge plays when they absolutely needed them.
Cedar Falls got a stop inside their 10-yard line and Denison Harrington ripped off a 24-yard fourth-quarter touchdown run in a thrilling 14-13 win over Iowa City High last night at Bates Field.Eli Berregaard and Harrington ran behind All-American left tackle Ross Pierschbacher all night.
Cedar Falls (1-0) trailed 13-7 midway through the fourth quarter after holding the Little Hawks to a field goal from inside the 10-yard line to stay down only one score.
The Tigers responded with a seven-play, 80-yard drive in only two minutes. Harrington broke through a couple of tackles and sprinted 24 yards for the touchdown and a 14-13 lead.
City (0-1) had two possessions to take the lead, but came up short. The Little Hawks even marched from their own 9-yard line to the Cedar Falls 39 in the final minute. Quarterback Mitch Wieland's last-second heave fell incomplete.The Little Hawks led most of the game thanks to Xavier Washpun's impressive 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown midway through the first quarter.
City is coming off its first losing season since 1987. It has lost three straight to Cedar Falls, including a 28-14 loss to open last season.
Cedar Falls fumbled on its first play of the season to give City a short field. The Little Hawks drove down to the 5-yard line but settled for a 21-yard field goal from Drew Cornwell for a 3-0 lead.
The Tigers lost another fumble two plays later, but wiped the mistake with an interception.
Cedar Falls followed the turnover with a 58-yard drive exclusively featuring Berregaard and Harrington. Berregaard capped off the series with a 5-yard touchdown.
