FORT DODGE -- Caitlin Wnek was 3-for-4 and scored three times, and Clear Creek Amana set aside the disappointment of a semifinal loss to defeat Washington (Iowa), 6-2, in the Class 4A third-place game at the state softball tournament Friday at the Rogers Sports Complex.The Clippers (43-2) took a 6-0 lead through 5 1/2 innings, and finished with 13 hits.Mallory Madsen added three hits for the winners. Mariah McKinnon was the winning pitcher, finishing 14-0 this season.Joni Erwin was 2-for-4, scored a run and knocked in another for Washington (32-10).
Pleasant Valley 5, Iowa City West 2Sydney Dwyer and Haley Smith drove in two runs apiece, and the Spartans kept West silent until the seventh inning of the 5A third-place game.Holly Hoelting hit a solo homer for the Spartans (34-7).West, which concluded its first trip to state in school history, managed just four hits -- one apiece from Mackenzie Haight, Brianna Sturtz, Shelly Stumpff and Madi Miller.The Women of Troy finished 37-8.
