Boys' Basketball 2013-14: Players To Watch

Dec. 1, 2013 5:40 pm
JORDAN BOHANNON, 6-0, soph, Linn-Mar - When you start at point guard at the Class 4A level as a freshman, you've got game. Will be interesting to see how big of a jump the fourth and final Bohannon brother makes this season. Averaged 8.0 points last season and had a team-leading 34 3-pointers.
MATT HEITMANN, 6-9, sr., Willamsburg - Raiders should have a fine ball club this season, led by this big man. Averaged 15.6 points last season. Has signed with Division II Augustana (S.D.).
WYATT LOHAUS, 6-2, sr., Iowa City West - A lot will be on his shoulders, especially early in the season, considering West's overall inexperience. Northern Iowa signee averaged 13.7 points and five assists last season, shooting 52 percent from the field.
LUKE LYLE, 6-2, sr., Keota - You average a double-double, that's impressive, especially when you're a guard. Averaged 15.3 points and 10.2 rebounds last season. First-team all-South Iowa Cedar League pick in 2012-13. Was a second-teamer as a freshman.
CODY MASON, 6-2, sr., MFL/Mar-Mac - A lot of pressure falls on his shoulders considering heavy graduation losses from a team that finished fourth in Class 2A last season and the previous season. Averaged 14.4 points in 2012-13.strong>CONNOR MCCAFFERY, 6-4, fr., Iowa City West - Judging by a recent jamboree (yes, it was just a jamboree), the son of Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery has significant game.
MATT NELSON, 6-8, sr., Cedar Rapids Xavier - Will play football for the Iowa Hawkeyes, but also had offers to play Division I college basketball. Averaged 10.6 points and 6.8 rebounds last season. Appeared to be less than 100-percent healthy at the end of football season, so that bears watching.
ELIAS NISSEN, 6-6, sr., Springville - Yeah, he can play football well. But did you know he's a pretty fair hoopster, too? Averaged 16 points and 10.4 rebounds last season.
ALEC PHILIPP, 6-1, sr., Alburnett - Averaged 16.5 points last season (third in the Tri-Rivers Conference). Also led Alburnett in assists and steals and was second in rebounding.
ETHAN STEINBRONN, 6-8, jr., West Central - Averaged a double-double of 18.3 points and 12.3 rebounds last season. Also averaged six blocks per game.
