Bowl season starts Saturday with milkshakes, Mexican avocados and yoga
6 FBS bowls Saturday, all guaranteed to fade from your memory faster than they entered it

Jumpin’ Jehoshaphat, there are six FBS bowl games Saturday!
How not to promote one of them: Get milkshakes involved. Which the Myrtle Beach Bowl has done. At a bowling alley, no less. Sad.
Ohio’s colors are blue, gray and old gold. Georgia Southern’s are bobcat green, black and tan. No one wants shakes with those colors.
A black and tan, as we all know, is far superior to a milkshake.
Rob Gronkowski will sing the national anthem at the Starco Brands LA Bowl Hosted by Gronk.
During an appearance on “The Dan Patrick Show,” Gronkowski said former New England Patriots teammate Julian Edelman didn’t like his recent practice singing of the anthem.
“Bro, let me take 10 more shots of tequila,” Edelman told Gronkowski after hearing it.
Better make it 11.
The LA Bowl no longer has Jimmy Kimmel as a sponsor. That was unfortunate. It was the first bowl named for a living person. Kimmel played the clarinet at the game.
The Isleta New Mexico Bowl between Fresno State and New Mexico State offered five ways for visiting fans to enjoy Albuquerque. One was to visit Petroglaph National Monument, one of the largest petroglyph sites in the nation.
No explanation of what a “petroglyph” is was provided.
Another of the five things for visitors to do: Eat spicy food.
At least no mention was made of Walter White or Saul Goodman, two Albuquerque legends.
There is an official reception Friday and a pregame tailgate Saturday for California fans at the Radiance Techologies Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La.
No, they won’t be held in phone booths. The reason, of course, is that phone booths are things of the past.
The bowl was played in the snow in 2000. It should be so lucky every year.
Cal and Texas Tech enter the game with 6-6 records. Also holding games pitting a 6-6 team against another 6-6 team: The Boca Raton, Gasparilla, Camellia and Famous Idaho Potato bowls. Minnesota (5-7) plays in the Quick Lane Bowl.
The R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl matches Jacksonville State and — get this — Louisiana. It’s the seventh New Orleans Bowl for Louisiana. New Orleans, coincidentally, is located in Louisiana.
Louisiana Coach Michael Desormeaux suggested New Orleans may be a better bowl-destination than Shreveport. The windchill at kickoff for last year’s Louisiana-Houston Independence Bowl in Shreveport was 12 degrees Fahrenheit.
The New Orleans Bowl has something that not every bowl offers: Yoga.
A yoga session is scheduled on the floor of the Caesars Superdome at 7:30 a.m., Saturday.
More yoga and less “Terminator” would have been a good strategy for the 2011 New Orleans Bowl.
I’ve saved Saturday’s best for last. It is, of course, the Avocados From Mexico Cure Bowl.
It will be played in Orlando, not Mexico City, Guadalajara or Tijuana. Unlike the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl and Pop-Tarts Bowl, which will be held at Camping World Stadium, the Avocados From Mexico Cure Bowl is at FBC Mortgage Stadium.
It was formerly known as Spectrum Stadium, and before that, Bright House Networks Stadium.
I’d like $5 for each of those free plugs. Those companies can Venmo me at mike-hlas.
Avocados From Mexico is the Cure Bowl’s fifth different sponsor in the last six years. FBC Mortgage Stadium is the bowl’s third different Orlando home in the last five years.
It was the Duluth Trading Company Cure Bowl last year, played at Exploria Stadium. Who will ever forget it?
The Miami University Alumni Association has a pregame event outside the stadium, for $60 a person, which is far more than tickets to the game cost. They start at $35, unless you buy them from online ticket brokers. Then, they’re considerably cheaper.
By the way, avocados are grown in Florida, too.
This year’s Avocados From Mexico Cure Bowl matches Miami (Ohio) and Appalachian State. Avocados are a possible snack for vegan hikers on the Appalachian Trail.
That trail stretches from Maine to Georgia, 2,190 miles. I need to hike that one of these days.
