Black Hawks fans sitting up close during last weekend's games may have noticed something a little different about the home team.
Most of the Hawks have grown (or tried to grow) a mustache in solidarity with other groups for November, the unofficial men's cancer awareness month, explains veteran forward Aaron Pearce.
“With a couple other individuals on the team, James Hansen and Jamie Hill, it's something we had done with our other teams in the past and thought it would be a special thing to bring to Waterloo.” Pearce continued, “I'd say Max Edson is in the lead right now for the best mustache…the worst mustache, I'd say would have to go to Eddie Wittchow, because he's been trying for a couple weeks, but you can't see much there.”
Hawks players also decided among themselves that they would each contribute ten dollars to help men's cancer awareness, support, and research. The team is offering fans the chance to match the individual player donations during games on Thanksgiving, December 2nd, and December 3rd. Anyone who makes a contribution at the Express Employment Professionals fan services table will receive a Black Hawks “Movember” supporter sticker.
Proceeds will go the local chapters of Us TOO and the American Cancer Society. Us TOO's Cedar Valley arm based at Allen Hospital has provided local prostate cancer patients and survivors with support and educational programs for over 20 years. The American Cancer Society was founded in 1913 and has long led research efforts and awareness campaigns to fight all forms of the disease.
