[Baseball] Mustangs get first sweep in league play

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Mount Mercy baseball team got its first sweep in Midwest Collegiate Conference play on Tuesday, defeating William Penn, 12-10 and 5-3, at Ken Charipar Field at Xavier High School.
The Mustangs led the opener, 11-0, after two innings and held on for the win. Junior right fielder Brent Pankow went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and four runs batted in, while junior center fielder Dustin BeGuhn blasted a three-run homer. Junior catcher Rafael Del Rio also collected two doubles and finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Senior second baseman Albert Diaz and sophomore third baseman Jacob Thompson also had three hits apiece.
A four-run fifth inning saved Mount Mercy (14-13, 6-6 MCC) in the nightcap. Trailing, 3-1, the Mustangs got an RBI single by junior first baseman Jeremy Glunt, a run-scoring double from junior designated hitter Paul Franco and a two-run base hit by Pankow to earn the sweep. Glunt was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Pankow had two more hits for the Mustangs. Senior right-hander Derrick Weber (5-2) was your winner, going six innings while surrendering two earned runs on eight hits while striking out four and walking four. Senior righty Steve Correa got the save with one inning of no-hit relief.
Mount Mercy is at Viterbo (Wis.) for a three-game set this weekend in La Crosse, Wis. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is at 1:00 p.m. Same start time for Sunday's single, nine-inning contest.
