Sep. 13, 2015 2:39 pm
Week 2. The Big Ten went 12-2 against the world. It beat Oregon.
And Indiana State, Florida International, Western Illinois, South Alabama ...
Here is this week's Fun with Numbers, at least one for each Big Ten team:
-3
— Wisconsin held Miami (Ohio) to minus-3 yards rushing in the Badgers' 57-0 win. That topped anything Wisconsin had done since it limited Northern Illinois to minus-13 rushing yards in 2007.
— Western Illinois was never in Illinois territory in the Illini's 44-0 waltz.
2
— Maryland's Will Likely returned a punt for a touchdown for the second straight week. It just didn't matter. The Terrapins absorbed a 48-27 home loss to Bowling Green.
3
— Iowa's Riley McCarron had three career catches, for a total of 11 yards, before his 25-yard touchdown grab with 2:14 left that broke a 17-17 tie in the Hawkeyes' 31-17 win at Iowa State.
4
— Oregon State managed just four total yards in the second-half of its 35-7 loss at Michigan.
10
— For the first time in 10 years, two Penn State freshmen scored touchdowns in the same game. True freshmen Brandon Polk and Saquon Barkley had scores in the Nittany Lions' 27-14 victory over Buffalo.
47.2
— Enjoying the 4,982-foot altitude of Fort Collins, Colo., Minnesota's Peter Martell punted nine times for an average of 47.2 yards in the Gophers' 23-20 overtime win over Colorado State. But last year's Big Ten Punter of the Year was topped by CSU's Hayden Hunt, who had nine punts for a 49.6-yard average.
50
— Three of Purdue quarterback Austin Appleby's four touchdown passes against Indiana State went for 50 yards or more. The Boilermakers beat Indiana State, 38-14.
57
— Northwestern has held two straight opponents without a touchdown for the first time in 57 years. The Wildcats blanked Eastern Illinois, 41-0.
102
— Michigan State had 102 tackles in its 31-28 victory over Oregon, and probably needed every one of them. All three starting Spartan linebackers had at least 11.
236
— Nebraska running back Terrell Newby had 236 total yards (189 rushing, 38 receiving) in the Cornhuskers' 48-9 romp over South Alabama.
337
— Rutgers' Janarion Grant had a kickoff return and punt return for touchdowns, and had a school-record 337 all-purpose yards. It just didn't matter. The Scarlet Knights absorbed a 37-34 home loss to Washington State.
11:51
— The Florida International-Indiana game in Bloomington ended at 11:51 p.m., Saturday. It didn't begin until 8:12. At least the Hoosiers won, 36-22.
87,634
— There were 87,634 more fans at the Hawaii-Ohio State game (107,145) than there were at Hawaii's home-opener against Colorado (19,511) the week before. The Buckeyes beat the Rainbow Warriors, 38-0.
Bonus numbers:
2
— Maryland and Rutgers, the Big Ten's newbies, were the only league teams to lose Saturday.
4,510
— Hawaii's team faced a 4,510-mile flight home after its game at Ohio State. That's a lot of air hours.
$1,200,000
— The payout Hawaii got for playing at Ohio State. The Rainbow Warriors will play at Wisconsin on Sept. 26.
