B1G Numbers: Big Saturday for Beathard, Rudock

Nov. 8, 2015 3:27 pm, Updated: Nov. 8, 2015 3:44 pm
Maryland and Purdue are 2-7 and out of contention for a berth in Detroit's QuickLane Bowl (unless they win their final three games and there aren't enough 6-6 teams to fill all the bowl slots).
But that won't shut down Big Ten football, or this week's edition of B1G numbers.
minus 14 - Wisconsin held Maryland quarterback Perry Hills to minus-14 yards rushing after Hills had rushed for 100-plus yards in each of his three previous games.
1 - Iowa's Desmond King is alone atop FBS in interceptions with 8. That's twice as many as any other Big Ten player. The last conference player with as many as eight picks in a season was Wisconsin's Jim Leonhard, who had 11 in 2002.
2 - Michigan went for a 2-point conversion when it led Rutgers by 25 points in the third quarter on the way to a 49-16 win. 'That's what the chart says to do,” said Michigan Coach Jim Harbaugh, 'so we went with that. Playing the percentages.”
7 - Maryland's Wes Brown ran seven yards for a first-quarter touchdown in the Terrapins' 31-24 loss to Wisconsin. It was Maryland's first score in the last seven weeks at Byrd Stadium.
8 - Purdue averaged eight yards to go on its 18 third-down chances in its 49-14 loss to Illinois.
9 - Iowa reached 9-0 in both 2009 and 2015 with a win over Indiana.
10 - Iowa quarterback C.J. Beathard (10-0) is the only FBS quarterback who is unbeaten with as many as 10 starts. Baylor's Seth Russell, who is shelved with a fractured neck bone, is 8-0. Oklahoma State's Mason Rudolph has an 11-game win streak as a starter, but is 11-1 in his career.
12 - Nebraska trailed Michigan State by 12 points with two minutes left. The Cornhuskers won, 39-38.
19 - There were 19 punts in Northwestern's 23-21 win over Penn State. The Nittany Lions had 11 of them.
27 - Nate Silver's fivethirtyeight.com gives Iowa a 27 percent chance to win the Big Ten, behind Ohio State (46 percent), and ahead of Michigan (13%) and Michigan State (12%). But Silver gives the Hawkeyes just an 8 percent of chance of reaching the College Football Playoff.
55 - Minnesota held Ohio State to 55 yards over the Buckeyes' first four possessions, and sacked OSU quarterback Cardale Jones three times in the first half of the Buckeyes' 28-14 win.
57 - Wisconsin senior linebacker Joe Schobert led his team in rushing at Maryland. He had a 57-yard carry after taking a snap on a fake punt. He is averaging 57 yards per carry in his college career.
113 - Rutgers has lost its last three games - against Ohio State, Wisconsin and Michigan - by a total of 113 points.
124 - Wisconsin was ranked 124th in the nation in kickoff returns. But Natrell Jamerson returned a kick 98 yards for a touchdown at Maryland, lifting the Badgers to 89th in that category.
186 - Northwestern's Justin Jackson rushed for 186 yards against Penn State. His last five carries totaled just 18 yards, but they were huge. They set up Jack Mitchell's game-winning 35-yard field goal.
337 - Michigan quarterback Jake Rudock had a career-high 337 passing yards for Michigan against Rutgers. He also ran for a 2-point conversion. 'He was on fire,” Harbaugh said. 'He had a great game, making all the appropriate throws, all the right reads, all day long on a windy, blustery day.” Just like in Beathard's effort against Iowa, toughness was the theme of the day for Rudock.
364 - Michigan State hadn't lost in 364 days until it was upset at Nebraska Saturday night.
382 - Illinois rushed for 382 yards at Purdue. The Illini had totaled 296 rushing yards in their previous four games.
