Connor Wheeler has been named an Iowa men’s basketball assistant coach, the third assistant to follow head coach Ben McCollum from Drake to the Hawkeyes.
Wheeler joined McCollum’s 2024-25 Drake staff after two years as an assistant coach at Southeast Missouri State. Before that, he worked in the men’s basketball programs of Southern Mississippi and Southern Illinois.
“Connor is a great up-and-coming coach,” said McCollum. “His career path has been fast and rightfully so. He’s very talented and will continue to hone his skills at the University of Iowa. He will help us get to a championship level.”
Wheeler rejoins Josh Sash and Bryston Williams, Iowa assistants who also were on McCollum’s Drake staff last season. Five of their Bulldogs players have reunited with their Drake coaches at Iowa.
Elsewhere, Tristan Spurlock will be an assistant coach on Fran McCaffery’s staff at Penn. Spurlock was on McCaffery’s Iowa staff the last three years.
