They were the heart and soul of a state-championship team.
They posted astronomical numbers.
And now, they are Class 3A co-state softball players of the year.
Clear Creek Amana's Fran Strub and Caitlin Wnek are honored together by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association, which today releases its 2011 all-state softball teams.
The junior duo led CCA to a 43-2 record and the 3A championship.
Wnek batted .625 with 64 runs and 85 RBIs. She collected 24 doubles, five triples and nine home runs. Strub hit .609, scored 87 runs and drove in 54. She registered 15 doubles, 13 triples and 12 homers, stealing 52 bases in 52 attempts.
Julia Hunter is the 2A player of the year after leading Iowa City Regina to the title. The senior batted .513 with 49 runs and 48 RBIs, with 14 doubles and 10 homers.
CCA's Jim White is the 3A coach of the year; Regina's Jon Prottsman was honored in 2A.
West Delaware's Jenna Hermsen, Solon's Arran Weeces and Mount Vernon's Sarah Ryan join Strub and Wnek on the Class 3A first team. Regina's Sara Kron and Jesup's Kelsey Lough accompany Hunter on the top 2A team.
Cedar Rapids Jefferson's Hannah Petersen and Rachel Sedlacek and Iowa City West's Tatum Klein were first-team selections in 4A.
