CEDAR RAPIDS - Looking back on the boys' golf season at Cedar Rapids Xavier, the Saints played well leading up to districts, finishing in the top seven positions in all of their meets.
Senior Jordan Even was successful by keeping his composure and his scores low. He shot a 74 in the beginning of the year at Hunters Ridge Golf Course, finishing fourth in the meet.
Sophomore Sam Martin showed he is a fierce competitor at the varsity level, even though he still is an underclassman. He shot a 63 on Sept. 19 and tied for third with junior Luke Winker at Irv Warren Golf Course in Waterloo on Sept. 29. As a team, the Saints posted a score of 295 at Irv Warren with the conference title on the line.
Boys' golf coach Tim O'Brien was very happy with the way the team played this year.
'With a very young team I have been quite pleased overall on how we have performed,” Xavier Coach Tim O'Brien said.
Districts were played Oct. 7 at Hunter's Ridge in Marion. The favorites were Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Xavier, Washington, Linn-Mar and Ottumwa. The Saints had the final two weeks of the season to prepare for districts.
'The team practiced numerous times at Hunter's Ridge in preparation for the district golf meet in order to compete and be one of the three teams to advance,” O'Brien said.
The Saints, however, finished fourth overall with a total score of 319, failing to move on to state. Kennedy finished first, followed by Linn-Mar and Ottumwa.
Martin had the lowest score on the team with a score of 77. Even finished close behind with a score of 78.
