3A Championship rematch set for Bettendorf, Southeast Polk

DES MOINES -- Bettendorf and Southeast Polk will face each other again with a state championship trophy at stake.The top-seeded Bulldogs and No. 3-seed Rams advanced to the championship match with victories in the semifinals of the Iowa High School Athletic Association Class 3A State Duals wrestling tournament Wednesday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.Bettendorf avenged an earlier loss to No. 4 Cedar Rapids Prairie with a decisive 43-19 win. The Bulldogs won nine of 14 matches, including top-ranked Logan Ryan's 5-1 decision over No. 2 Josh Wenger at 138.Bettendorf advanced to the finals for the fourth straight year, winning its only title in 2012.Southeast Polk handed second-seeded Waverly-Shell Rock its first loss of the season with a 38-31 win. The Rams led through, winning the first five matches and six of the first seven. Southeast Polk second-ranked heavyweight Jacob Marnin dropped Waverly-Shell Rock's top-ranked Kaleb Staack, 3-2, after Rams' 220-pounder Ethan Anderson scored a pin in just seven seconds.Southeast Polk won its first title, beating Bettendorf in last year's championship. Bettendorf beat Southeast, 37-27, last month at Hilton Coliseum in Ames.
