2A Iowa State Wrestling tournament: Thomsen leads trio from Union into semifinals

DES MOINES – Union Community advanced three to the semifinals and Max Thomsen's quest for a fourth state title continues.
The Knights were fourth after the second session of the Iowa High School Athletic Association Class 2A state tournament. Mediapolis leads in a tight team race, only three points ahead of Creston-OM. Crestwood is third with 42 ½ points and Union has 39.
Thomsen won by fall to reach the 145-pound semifinals. He is joined by teammates Derek Holschlag (113) and 170-pounder Jacob Holschlag, who is going for a second straight crown.
Independence and Solon each has two semifinalists.
The Spartans' Cole Fritz (138) and heavyweight Logan Linderbaum each posted 2-1 decisions in the quarterfinals. Fritz beat Mason Buster, of Mediapolis. Linderbaum topped Creston's Jake Gutschenritter.

The Mustangs top-ranked Chase Straw (152) and 160-pounder Jake Juhl advanced to the semifinals. Straw pinned Cherokee's Hunter Morrow in 3:34. Juhl beat Saydel's Dylan Coffin, 13-6.
Center Point-Urbana's defending state champion and two-time finalist Brock Rathbun rolled to the semifinals. He recorded a 16-1 technical fall over Oelwein's Brennon Ryan at 120.
North Fayette Valley's Nick Baumler (170), top-ranked 182-pounder Brent Lammers, of West Delaware, and Washington's second-ranked Brad Skubal at 195 reached the semifinal round.
