BOYS' GOLF TEAMS TO WATCH
West Delaware - The Hawks are coming off the program's first state championship and return a strong core from last season. Clayton Larsen was second and Harrison Guetzko was eighth. Bryce Frick and Trent Shaw also have state experience. Coach Tom Fetter said the team is looking for a sixth player to add to the team's depth.
Mount Vernon - The Mustangs were third last season in Class 2A and are moving to 3A, adding to the deep and competitive class in Eastern Iowa. All six state golfers last season were underclassmen, including Connor Herrmann, Andy Decamp, Tommy Hook, Drew Wolfe, Johnny See and Jake Hansen. Herrmann, a junior, was third. Mount Vernon has depth and talent.
Williamsburg - The Raiders have advanced to five straight state tournaments, returning all but one from that team. Jackson Subbert, Zach Buch and Dillon VanEtten were juniors, while Sam Buch and Isaac Knock were freshman on that state team. Williamsburg will be tested with the tough Wamac, but could make it six in a row.
East Buchanan - The Bucs have four state tournament golfers back from a team that placed fourth. Chris Cooksley won a state title as a freshman and Hunter Schulte tied for 10th last season, giving them two strong scorers. Tyler Hare averaged us 40 per nine holes and Isaac Anderegg has experience. Jacob Hesner has contributed this season, making East Buch a formidable team this year.
GIRLS' GOLF TEAMS TO WATCH
Dyersville Beckman - The Blazers have a solid group of seniors led by Brooke and Blair Klosterman, who have been to three straight state meets and have top-five finishes. Four of their top five nine-hole scorers return, including Keri Wells and Cori Scherbring, who competed for the fifth-place state team last year. The Blazers also won the Wamac Super Meet and should be a contender again.
Iowa City West - The Women of Troy have four good players back. Avery Kout and Jordan Amelon were second-team all-MVC Mississippi performers, while Mackenzi Marsh and Allye Boardman earned honorable mention honors. They have big shoes to fill due to graduation. They could be among the better teams, looking to improve the runner-up CRANDIC finish, with some balance in the fifth and sixth spots.
Western Dubuque - The Bobcats return their top four scorers from the state tournament team that placed sixth last season. They were third in a tough Wamac with Quinn Herbst and Lauren Prier leading the way. Catherine McCoy and Celyna Koopman are two more state scorers. A strong nucleus with a good tradition and they could have the chance to improve last season's finishes.
Cedar Rapids Xavier - The Saints have a tough task replacing Grace Winker and Maddie Bertsch, who were two of the Metro's top golfers. They are coming off a 4A state title, but will have to rely on balance to continue its success. Juniors Amy Olberding (second team) and Catie Locher (honorable mention) return with all-conference honors, while Melanie Wertzberger was a state participant last year. Emily Schuff saw some time last year, as the Saints will need a few more scorers to emerge.
