DES MOINES -- The numbers, simply, were too good to ignore.Shelby Hembera became the first all-stater in Cedar Valley Christian's brief history as a state-sanctioned athletics school. The junior has been selected to the Iowa Newspaper Association Class 1A first team in girls' basketball."It's something I was hoping might happen, but you try not to focus on something like that," Hembera said. "There are so many good players out there. To be named as one of the eight best in 1A, it's a blessing and an honor. I'm very thankful."All-state teams were selected Saturday morning. MOC-Floyd Valley's Alexis Conaway earned the top prize, Miss Iowa Basketball 2014, after leading the Lady Dutch to the Class 3A championship -- and setting a state-tournament record with 46 points in the semifinals.Hembera, who led the state in scoring and rebounding, is one of 11 area players to earn first-team status.Haley Lorenzen of Iowa City High and Dani Franklin of Cedar Rapids Washington are repeat selections on the 5A top team. Rose Simon-Ressler, who led Western Dubuque to the 4A championship game, is a first-teamer in that class.Center Point-Urbana's duo of Kennedy Salow and Arika Wooldridge both were picked to the 3A first team, as was Paige Greiner of Williamsburg.North Linn's Nicole Miller, Edgewood-Colesburg's Kari Fitzpatrick, Iowa City Regina's Jenna Lehman and Jesup's Alissa Brown are 2A first-team honorees.A 6-foot-3 senior bound for the University of Florida, Lorenzen led City High to the No. 1 spot in the season's final rankings for the second straight year. The Little Hawks (24-1) were a dominant force all season before falling to eventual champion West Des Moines Dowling in the state semifinals.Despite a rough outing against Dowling, Lorenzen averaged 20.8 points and 9.5 rebounds per game and shot 59.5 percent from the floor. The Little Hawks were MVC Mississippi Division champions; Washington (18-5) claimed the Valley Division crown behind Valparaiso signee Franklin, whose 22.3 points per game were second-most in the big-school class.Simon-Ressler averaged 12.8 points per game, leading Western Dubuque to a 23-3 mark and an unlikely run to the 4A final. The Bobcats shared the Wamac Conference championship, then beat three higher-ranked teams (Waverly-Shell Rock, Sioux City Heelan and Ballard) in the postseason before bowing to No. 1 Harlan, 55-51, Saturday. With Wooldridge and Salow, Center Point-Urbana was one of four teams -- Waterloo West (5A), Harlan (4A) and Newell-Fonda (1A) were the others -- to land two players on the first team.Wooldridge, a sophomore, averaged 18.0 points per game. Salow, a senior bound for the Naval Academy, added 17.2. The Stormin' Pointers (18-7) advanced to their first state tournament since 1995."We graduated a lot of kids from last year's team; these were the only two back with any experience," said CPU Coach Philip Klett. "They really had to carry the load."Greiner is a repeat selection in 3A after leading Williamsburg (22-3) to a share of the Wamac title (with Western Dubuque) and a piece of the Wamac West divisional crown (with CPU). A Drake recruit, Greiner posted 16.1 points and 4.2 assists per game.Behind Miller, North Linn is in the midst of its best girls' basketball run in school history. The Lynx were 24-2 and reached the 2A semifinals this year. Miller, a junior, was the 2A scoring leader at 25.3 points per game, and added 6.1 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 4.1 steals per contest.Lehman averaged 15.8 points per game as Regina (18-6) won the River Valley Conference South Division title and reached the regional finals. Fitzpatrick averaged 22.0 points per game, Brown 19.1.Hembera's situation left voters with a quandary. The 6-foot junior averaged 33.2 points and 16.4 rebounds (both state highs, in all classes) for a team that went 1-21."I'm really pleased with her improvement from the beginning of the year to the end," said CVCS Coach Craig Foote. "I was thankful she got through the season without injury. She gets so much attention, and she was fatigued at times, I was afraid she was going to get hurt."This honor is great for our school and our program. It's great for Shelby and her teammates."Other Metro/Iowa City players receiving all-state recognition are Aleena Hobbs of Washington, Amanda Ollinger of Jefferson and Kiera Washpun of City High (5A second team), Morgan Martin of Kennedy, Katie Sommer of Linn-Mar and Mikaela Morgan of Iowa City West (5A third team) and Hayley Deutmeyer of Xavier and Michalyn Mohr of Marion (4A second team).Conaway claimed Miss Iowa Basketball honors after posting two memorable efforts at Wells Fargo Arena last week. In the quarterfinals, the posted 21 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and seven steals in a win over CPU. Then, in the semifinals, she scored 46 points on 17-of-25 shooting (plus 12 of 13 free throws) against Mediapolis. An Iowa State signee for volleyball (and a three-time state high jump champion), Conaway averaged 21.7 points, 8.6 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 4.5 steals and 2.8 blocks per game. She shot 64 percent from the floor. 2014 IOWA NEWSPAPER ASSOCIATION GIRLS BASKETBALL ALL-STATE TEAMSCLASS 5AFirst Team
