2014 Boys' State Basketball Tournament: Wednesday's Games

Mar. 11, 2014 12:13 pm
IOWA CITY WEST (20-3) vs. SOUTHEAST POLK (18-4)
What: Class 4A Quarterfinal
When: 1:05 p.m.
Where: Wells Fargo Arena, Des Moines
Scouting Report: West's bid for three consecutive 4A championships begins. The Trojans are a No. 4 seed to SEP's five ... West is led by Mr. Basketball candidate Wyatt Lohaus. The 6-foot-2 senior, a Northern Iowa signee, averages 19.9 points per game, shooting 56.6 percent from the field. He also owns the school's career assists record, overtaking UNI freshman Jeremy Morgan earlier this season. Someone other than Lohaus needs to have a big tournament, however. A good candidate is junior wing David DiLeo (12.6 ppg), who is shooting an astounding 95.6 percent from the free-throw line (43 of 45) ... Southeast Polk likes to play up tempo and shoot a lot of 3-pointers. The Rams have a two-headed monster in Nick Jeffries (17.5 ppg) and Tucker Kamman (17.2 ppg), who have combined to hoist nearly 300 treys. The lone common opponent of the teams is Linn-Mar, which West beat, 81-56, and Southeast Polk lost to, 66-61.
Coach's Comment: "We've been every seed imaginable, but we've never won a state tournament being a 'one.' We've been a 'one' and not win it, I know that. This is as open a 4A field as I've ever seen. There is lots of parity. Teams with success usually are those with experience. That's something we'll have to overcome." --

CEDAR RAPIDS KENNEDY (18-5) vs. SIOUX CITY NORTH (21-3)
What: Class 4A Quarterfinal
When: 8:15 p.m.
Where: Wells Fargo Arena, Des Moines
Scouting Report: North is the third seed to Kennedy's six. The Stars were in last year's state tournament with the very same starting lineup, losing in the quarterfinals to Cedar Falls. This is Kennedy's first trip to Des Moines since 2008 ... Kennedy is undersized, relying on quickness, 3-point shooting and aggressive perimeter-extending defense. The Cougars have been lead all season by senior guard A.J. Carter, their only double-digit scorer (15.3 ppg). Two of Kennedy's five losses were to Linn-Mar, with the others to Iowa City West, Des Moines Hoover and Dubuque Senior (all substate finalists) ... North has one of the state's top players in 6-5 junior guard Daniel Tillo. He averages 22.3 points and shoots 46.2 percent from 3-point range. The Stars will try and push tempo, spread the floor and take advantage of their athletes.
Coach's Comment: "North is long and athletic. Their guards are quick. They use their length very well as a team. Even in their zone defense, they extend the floor and try and control tempo. (Tillo) is 6-5, has a very quick release and is left-handed, which makes him even tougher to defend." --
