2014 Boys' State Basketball Tournament: Monday's Roundup

Mar. 10, 2014 7:32 pm
DES MOINES - Ten years ago, Brian Brungard was the starting point guard for a Dunkerton boys' basketball team that won the Class 1A state championship. One of his teammates was fellow all-stater and future Coe College teammate Kyle Kuenstling.
Monday afternoon saw Brungard coaching the Raiders at the state tournament, with his best player being Kuenstling's brother.
"I think I was a little more nervous as a coach," said Brungard, after Dunkerton's 50-38 1A quarterfinal win over East Mills at Wells Fargo Arena. "As I've told other people when I've been asked that question, you have a little more control on the court. As a coach, you tell them what you'd like them to do, give them a game plan. But you never know if nerves get in the way or something like that. You're always more nervous as a coach, but it's also more satisfying that way when you win."
Nerves got in the way for a lot of this one, as the game was tied at the half, 19-19, and Dunkerton (26-1) led after three quarters only by a four-point margin. And that was only because Nick Anderson hit a desperation trey at the third-quarter buzzer from about 45 feet.
But the Raiders finally got their offense going in the fourth to put away the stingy Wolverines (23-4).
"We were having a lot of problems boxing out in the first half," said Kory Kuenstling, the 6-foot-11 senior center headed to Drake. "We were outrebounded by 10 in the first half, so our only focus was to rebound. We know we are a good offensive team, and we'd score."
Kuenstling had 13 points, nine blocked shots and eight rebounds. Trevor Jacobsen also had 13 points.
Keegan Wederquist led East Mills, making its first state tournament appearance, with 13 points.
WEST LYON 72, NEWELL-FONDA 57 - Pretty much a shame these teams had to play in the quarterfinals.West Lyon rode a 30-point fourth quarter to the "upset" of 1A top-ranked and top-seeded Newell-Fonda. Kyle Groeneweg had 18 points and Kacey Myrlie 14 for the Wildcats (21-5), given the No. 8 seed despite all of their losses coming to Class 2A and 3A schools.Newell-Fonda (25-1) led at the half, 35-30, and after three quarters, 46-42. Brady Dicks had a team-high 15 points.West Lyon plays Keota (25-1) in Thursday's semifinals at 10:30 a.m.
BELMOND-KLEMME 56, LAMONI 55 - Newell-Fonda wasn't the only high seed not to survive its 1A quarterfinal. Caleb Torkelson and Elijah Kinseth had 13 points apiece as seventh-seeded B-K handed second-seeded Lamoni its first loss of the season.
Jeremy Deemer hit a 3-pointer with 34 seconds left for Lamoni (25-1) to tie it at 55. Kinseth made one of two free throws with 14 remaining for what turned out to be the winning point.
Lamoni called timeout with 9.8 left but a pass inside to a well-guarded Deemer deflected off his hands and out of bounds with a second remaining. A 2,000-point scorer in his career, Deemer finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds.
Belmond-Klemme (23-3) plays Dunkerton in a Friday afternoon semifinal.
WESTERN CHRISTIAN 76, ALBIA 53 - Few issues for the top-ranked, top-seeded Wolfpack in their Class 2A quarterfinal. In fact, leading scorer Kyle Fopma played for the first time in nearly a month, scoring seven points. He blew out his knee but is playing through the pain.Big man Taylor Feenstra (6-foot-7) had 26 points and 20 rebounds for Western Christian (25-0), which led from start to finish. Josh VanLingen (6-6) added 19 points.Albia (17-8) was led by Matt Baker's 19 points, including 10-of-11 free-throw shooting.
