VIDEO: 2010 Iowa basketball recruits; future recruiting update
Oct. 12, 2009 10:00 am
It was just on a makeshift basketball court on Krause Plaza on Saturday, but it provided the backdrop for Iowa fans' first glimpse at the Hawkeyes' 2010 basketball recruiting class.
All of Iowa's commitments in 2010 took official visits last weekend, and several other top high school prospects in the region took unofficial visits. The basketball commitments plan to sign letters of intent on Nov. 11.
Iowa's four 2010 recruits shot hoops and signed a few autographs for the fans who recognized. Power forward Cody Larson (6-foot-9), guard Roy Marble Jr. (6-5), guard Ben Brust (6-2) and forward Zach McCabe (6-6) put on a show for fans about 3 hours before the Iowa-Michigan football game. All of them but McCabe came to Iowa City on Friday. McCabe, who quarterbacks Sioux City Heelan's football team, arrived Saturday.
“This has been a good experience,” Marble Jr. said. “I can't wait to be down here all the time.”
Larson was the first of the four to commit to Iowa. He picked the Hawkeyes more than a year ago.
“It's been great, just hanging out with the guys, getting fed, watched them scrimmage ...,” Larson said. “It's been good.”
Among the several basketball players touring Iowa on unofficial visits were center Adam Woodbury (6-11) of Sioux City East and guard Mike Gesell (6-0) of South Sioux City, Neb. Both are sophomores.
Woodbury competed against McCabe and Iowa freshman Brennan Cougill. He participated in Iowa's elite camp in August. Gesell was ill and didn't go to the camp.
Iowa and Iowa State have offered scholarships to Woodbury, he said. Iowa is among several schools, including Iowa State, Northern Iowa, Nebraska and Creighton looking at Gesell.
“I'm excited to be here,” Woodbury said. “It's an honor to come and hang with the guys.”
