1950 champion team inducted into UNI Hall of Fame

The 1950 wrestling team and former wrestling coach Don Briggs are among the 2009 class being inducted into the University of Northern Iowa athletics Hall of Fame.The Panthers' 1950 wrestling squad won both the NCAA and AAU team championships, claiming the school's lone Division I national team title. The team was led by individual champions Keith Young, Bill Nelson and Bill Smith.Briggs, a former Cedar Rapids Jefferson prep, served as the Panthers head coach from 1983 to 1997. He guided the program to nine top-15 finishes and two 10th-place finishes. During his tenure, Briggs coached 15 All-Americans and compiled a 164-98 dual record while winning 12 consecutive regional titles.Other inductees are golfer Lisa Miller, swimmer Mark Onstott, runner Joey Woody, a former Iowa City High prep, and sports information director Nancy Justis.
